Wedding Toasts

Weddings are as individual as the couples that have them and wedding toasts give an opportunity to put feelings into words and express the collective feelings of everyone there. Toasts can be offered with a sip of champagne, wine, a mixed drink, sparkling grape juice, or non-alcoholic punch.

Order of wedding toasts:

  1. Toast to the bride by the best man or close friend or relative
  2. Toast to the couple by a close friend or relative
  3. Groom's response - must include words of thanks to the bride, thanks to those who made the toast, thanks to both sets of parents, thanks to the bridesmaids
  4. Other toast by a close person of the family
  5. Toast by the father of the bride, also thanking those who have attended the wedding and reception.

Making the toast

  1. The toast should be served to the bride first, then the groom, then the maid of honor, then parents, and then the best man.
  2. Make sure that all of the glasses are filled before beginning the wedding toast.
  3. The person who is giving the toast should stand up and raise their glass with their right hand.
  4. The speech should be short, sweet and directed to the couple and their future happiness.
  5. Gaze around the room shifting eye contact so that everyone is involved in the act while giving the wedding toast.
  6. You can be tempted to do a short, sweet and generic toast. But the couple would probably like something a little more personal, otherwise it may seem like you didn't care about this duty, or that the couple isn't interesting enough to be the subject of a toast.
